Over 95% of desktop POS terminals still ship with the motherboard backup battery (commonly called the POS battery) soldered or buried deep inside the chassis. This 20-year-old design choice creates three profit-killing problems in 2025:
- Explosive shipping costs: Any device containing a lithium coin cell is classified as UN38.3 Class 9 hazardous goods for air transport. Freight forwarders routinely charge 3–8× the normal rate.
- Customs delays & rejection risk: Battery-equipped shipments trigger mandatory inspections in Europe, Latin America, Middle East and Southeast Asia — often adding 5–15 days and unpredictable rejection.
- Support nightmare: 40–60% of all "machine won't boot after power outage" tickets are nothing more than a dead POS battery. Dispatching a technician for a $0.5 part costs you $300–$800 every single time.
One 20ft container to Brazil or Dubai can easily cost you an extra $1,200–$2,000 just because of the POS battery.
